  • Opoka provided a lifeline to our client after they emerged from a situation of exploitation and abuse. Being able to access psychological support in their own language and receiving education around the issues of domestic violence, enabled our client to begin the journey of recovery that will empower them to make better relationship choices in the future.

    DV Service
  • We are so lucky in Bristol to have a specialist service that meets the needs of Polish women and children. It is vital to have local specialist services such as Opoka where women can access support by trained professionals in their own languages and who have an intimate understanding of their culture and the issues they might be facing. Without this kind of culturally specific support many women would not access any services at all to get the essential help they need.

  • Taunton Womens Aid is a small Somerset charity who make grants to organisations providing support for those suffering from or as a consequence of domestic abuse. We first came across Opoka several years ago when it made an application to us for funding to expand its Bristol based work into Somerset. We immediately liked the fact that they were working exclusively with Polish women in the community who through language difficulties and cultural differences were very isolated. We agreed a grant to enable the expansion of their work into Somerset since when we have come to appreciate the large numbers of people they are able to help, and the professionalism and caring approach of all the staff. Advice, counselling, support and literature are provided In Polish, and there is partnership working with government and other statutory bodies. Opoka continues to grow without losing its original drive and enthusiasm, yet developing a wide range of specialist support. We are happy to continue supporting its work.

How We Help

Opoka offers guidance, resources, and support to empower and uplift Polish families in need.

Practical and emotional support

At Opoka, we understand that escaping domestic abuse is just the first step. That’s why we offer women and children practical support — from help with housing and finances to navigating the legal system — alongside emotional support from our experienced, bilingual team. We walk alongside you with care, compassion and confidentiality, helping you rebuild your life with dignity and strength.

We provide advice, signposting, and a listening ear at every stage of your journey. Whether you need someone to talk to or help accessing vital resources, we’re here for you — without judgment, without pressure.

Safe accommodation

Safety is the foundation of healing. That’s why Opoka offers the first specialist safe houses in the UK dedicated to Polish women and their children. Our homes are secure, welcoming, and supportive environments where women can begin to recover, regain confidence, and plan their future.

We provide both shared accommodation and self-contained move-on flats, designed to offer structure and stability. Each woman is supported with personalised care, helping her feel safe, seen, and empowered every step of the way.

Counselling and therapeutic programs

Healing from trauma takes time — and the right support. Our counselling and therapeutic services offer a safe, confidential space for women and children to explore their experiences, process emotions, and begin to heal.

From one-to-one sessions to group support, we provide trauma-informed therapy tailored to the needs of survivors. All of our programmes are designed to rebuild self-esteem, improve mental health, and help participants regain a sense of control, hope and peace.

Psycho-educational workshops for women and children

Knowledge is power — and through our psycho-educational workshops, women and children learn how to understand abuse, rebuild healthy boundaries, and develop tools for emotional resilience. 🧠

We offer workshops in Polish and English, making sure our community feels seen and supported. From parenting support to sessions on confidence, mental wellbeing and self-care, our workshops empower families to break the cycle of abuse and move forward with strength.
